This was the event of a lifetime. I, along with 12 other young journalism and PR students throughout the nation, was selected to attend an all-expenses-paid reporting experience at GM World Headquarters in Detroit, MI.

During the 4-day event, our team heard from legendary journalists like Ray Suarez from PBS and NPR, industry leaders like Mary Barra, CEO of GM and Alan Batey, President of Chevrolet North America, and we learned from journalism and PR mentors published in outlets like Vox, Buzzfeed, NBC, Forbes, Inc., NPR, PBS, and more.

My colleagues and I also reported from the North American International Auto Show, where we attended the worldwide debut of the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse with Chevrolet North America president Alan Batey, watched as Chevy's revolutionary Bolt EV won North American Car of the Year at the show, and got to experience that vehicle firsthand during a voyage through essential Detroit hotspots.

 For my performance during the week, I was given the GMC Bold Award, named based on a core design value from one of GM's most well-known divisions.

 Cadillac’s latest concept, the Escala. This design comes as Cadillac has moved most of their operations from Detroit to the Cadillac House in New York’s Soho neighborhood. This represents a shift in brand strategy for the historic American luxury auto brand; Cadillac is now considering themselves a luxury brand which happens to make cars. This strategy has worked very well for my favorite local dealership, Mercedes-Benz of The Woodlands.

 The Chevy Bolt EV. This compact car runs completely on electricity and yields 238 miles on a single charge. Our group split up into teams and each took a Bolt EV through metro Detroit on a landmarks scavenger hunt. I was impressed by the smartphone integration capabilities and the pickup of the electric motor.

 My favorite car of the show, the Buick Cascada. It’s their first convertible in 25 years, and it represents the best of Buick’s illustrious past while bringing the brand into the future.
